Can Drawing Help Me Reach My Goals?


Question: Can the act of doing simple line drawings help us follow the program, reach our health goals, and live the "BeSlim" lifestyle? YES!!!!!

Announcement:  I have a new skill to help us reach and keep our improved health. We've been using the Structural Tension Chart and I've learned the power of doing the chart using simple line drawings. Call me! Let's do this together!!

As many of you know, Greg and I are five years slim ... reaching the goals in the spring of 2009 wasn't as difficult as I thought it would be. The Take Shape Program is incredible and our coaches have been wonderful. The ongoing challenge has been revising life-long eating habits and staying slim! (Thank goodness for Dr Andersen!) And part of the joy has been the privilege of helping others do the same.

Since drawing these pictures, I've felt more confident in my eating patterns. The temptation to grab and eat every chip in sight has subsided and I've put my scale away. I can hardly wait to hear how this process might benefit you too. 

Request: Since you have also decided to reinvent yourself, I have a special request ... get a scrap of paper (do it right now before you have a chance to talk yourself out of it!) and do a line drawing of your Current Reality and your Desired New Reality.  In between the drawings, list three bold action steps you can do today to help you make the shift. Snap a photo of your drawing and send it to me by text or email. I can't wait to see your "Health Transformation" art!

What's Good with You?

Good Morning Take Shapers,
If being a Health Coach was a "regular job," I'd just want to hear about how your dietary efforts were going ... that and the referrals are what keep me in business.  However, this is not a regular job! It's a long term relationship and that means I'm looking forward to hearing how you are, what you're up to, and what life changes you are seeing since making the decision to improve your health!

As I follow my personal path to improve my health and coaching skills, deepen my understanding and expand core happiness, I've run across some incredible teachers and guides. Recently, I was at a coaching presentation with Patti Dobrowolski who explained how doing simple drawings of your "Current Reality" and "Desired Results" is even more powerful than making a written list. I'd love to explore these techniques with you if you are interested. The basics can be found in part one of  Dr A's Habits of Health, chapter 11 in Discover Your Optimal Health, and throughout Robert Fritz' Path of Least Resistance,  Adding the element of very simple drawings engages the right side of our brain and make our goals clearer, and more sustainable.

I let go of a number of relationships that were dragging me into chronic gloom, gossip, and self doubt. I feel so much happier, positive, and capable! My body is less burdened and so is my mind and spirit!

Finding and Staying in Balance!

Developing and maintaining a sense of balance continues to be a challenge for me ... you too? Of course, it all begins in utero as we float to the rhythmic heart beat of our mothers but then, we run out of space and get shoved out! In a twinkling of an eye, we figure out how to cruise our domain then walk, run then dance, ride a bike then ski and kayak, etc. Eventually, good balance keeps us from falling over as we age ever so gracefully!

The emotional balancing act is a bit more subtle and tricky ... thankfully, relationships help me stay poised and stable even when the earth seems to shake, winds are relentless, and I feel overwhelmed or "beside myself!" 

The work of Michael Grab offers an inspiring example of how to illustrate our desperate need for balance tangible! How do you keep your composure and stay in balance???

"Michael Grab has mastered the art of stone balancing. He explains how he does it. “The most fundamental element of balancing in a physical sense is finding some kind of “tripod” for the rock to stand on. Every rock is covered in a variety of tiny to large indentations that can act as a tripod for the rock to stand upright, or in most orientations you can think of with other rocks. By paying close attention to the feeling of the rocks, you will start to feel even the smallest clicks as the notches of the rocks in contact are moving over one another. In the finer point balances, these clicks can be felt on a scale smaller than millimeters. Some point balances will give the illusion of weightlessness as the rocks look to be barely touching. Parallel to the physical element of finding tripods, the most fundamental non-physical element is harder to explain through words. In a nutshell, I am referring to meditation, or finding a zero point or silence within yourself. Some balances can apply significant pressure on your mind and your patience. The challenge is overcoming any doubt that may arise.”

Congratulations Marlon!

It's Not All About Weight Loss!

I want to share a comment from a new client:
"Thinking of eating every 2.5 - 3 hours is a little adjustment for me, I feel like I'm thinking of eating all day long!"
He went on to explain that he typically didn't "feel hungry" until after 10am.  Many folks grab a cola or "designer" coffee at that point, work through lunch and arrive home "starving" ... literally starving!  Consuming the majority of our calories late in the day, as our brains search frantically for nutrients, means that we over-eat, store the excess, and pack on pounds so that our trousers feel just a little bit tighter the following day.

"Waiting till I'm hungry" is a frequent comment - most people have completely lost track of when they actually are in need of fuel and when they've had enough.  Most new clients who a carrying (Literally! Think about it!!) 100 extra pounds, tell me how little they eat during the day and I know they are right.  The body will hoard and hang on to every little bit we give it if its not being nourished on a regular basis.  Then, we tend to over-eat in the evenings and our bodies covert those calories into fat and lay down another layer.  Until we start a "Starve and Sweat diet" or use our Fat Burning system (a much easier option!), it's almost impossible to tap into that storage tank efficiently and lose weight.  It's not just about weight loss or "the food," it's really about establishing new habits, and getting confidently on the road to optimal health.

Compare eating nutritious meals to breathing - fuel your body rhythmically and consistently every 2-3 hours - pretty soon you won't have to think about timing at all.  Your tummy will alert you that it's time for a fueling.  For more information on weight loss and optimal health, read our story and take a minute to view what the other ordinary people have experienced.

What do I do when "I get there?"

I have the joy of checking in with clients weekly ... here's my note to clients this morning. When you're ready to get started, just let me know - this is the easiest, most enjoyable and cost effective, health promoting system I've ever encountered!!!
I want to say a brief word about Transition ... 
I've heard from a few clients who didn't transition "by the book" and experienced the old familiar Yo-Yo dieting drama - we all hate that!

Get out your Quick Start Guide (private message me and I'll send it to you) and reread the portion on transitioning. Let me know if you'd like the study guide to Dr A's Habits of Health. I'm also happy to send you the Maintenance Guide and a little blurb I wrote when Greg and I went through transition several years ago. It's much easier now days with the encouragement to go from a 5&1 to a 3&3 routine - this makes stying lean super easy!

Let me know what I can do to be supportive and helpful - if connecting daily works for you, I'm delighted to do that with you!

What new Habit are you working on this week? 
For me it's remembering to drink enough water and mindfulness while at potlucks and celebrations. I have to make a concerted effort to bring munchies that are supportive of my "Lean Self" so I don't over indulge in the delicacies that my "Let's eat it all before it's gone Self" has an affinity for!

 I'm down to 134.5 !!! I haven't been this skinny since I was pregnant with my daughter who is 18!!! I was so sick then and I feel great now.
 
Sometimes the greatest victories are not always a number on the scale. The older I get, and with thyroid disease, the slower those numbers tend to move. That said, I am officially off all my diabetes medications, my HBP meds were lowered in half, and my cholesterol is below the normal level. I seriously want to cry. I'm so proud of myself."
