Ask the Questions and Celebrate Everything!

Goals and intentions are the focus of many conversations this week ... It seems like "The Holidays" are all about "What we are going to Get" and, with the New Year, the focus is shifting to "Who we're going to Become!"  I love this cyclic process.  

It's interesting to ask the Questions: 
  • What are my core passions?
  • What are my short and long term goals?
  • Did I accomplish what I wanted last year?  
  • If I continue on this road, will I meet my goals for this year?
  • How will I recognize Divine Guidance and assistance?
  • What is my intention?
  • Where will I put my attention?
  • When will I feel joy and "no tension?" 
And I love the resources that appear as we each take stock of where we are and where we want to go. For my health, I'm participating and supporting others in the Stop, Challenge, Choose 12 week Contest. For my spiritual development, I'm participating in a Baha'i Deepening course. For my mental health, I'm delighting in the materials and exercises from the Passion Test.

Holiday Tips: Fill Yourself up with Laughter!

Laughter really is the best medicine!


Filling yourself up with the company of good friends and rollicking laughter will fill you up and intercept the gnawing "hunger" that we often feel this time of year ...

Just 15 minutes of laughter increased the level of pain tolerance by 10% and the kind of laughter that works best is a belly aching laugh that usually only happens when you are with others.

'Tis the Season to be Stressed?

OK, "Tis The Season" to make merry and be a bit stressed!

We're on the count down through Chanukah, Winter Solstice, Soyaluna, DongZhi, Christmas, Boxing Day, Kwanzza, and New Year's Eve ... I'll bet you, like me, have a lot on your mind ... we are being bombarded by Ho Ho advertising, missing loved ones, unattainable expectations ...there's a lot to do.  This can lead to feelings of exhaustion, guilt, and being chronically a day late and a dollar short!

So, since all of us are on the determined journey to better physical, mental, and financial health, all the posts from now until December 31st are going to focus on "Holiday Survival Tips."  These tips can be used anytime of the year!  The ones that have been posted so far, in case you haven't read them and would like to look them up, include:

All I Want for Christmas ...

"All I Want for Christmas ... " 
I'm hearing "that" song and thinking about what I really want and wondering if it is in alignment with what you want too.

I'd like a little more time:
  • to explore my creative talents ... maybe I'll make a few gifts?
  • to be present with my kids and grandbabies ... to just laugh and play, share love and make memories!
  • to be prepared with healthy snacks and meals so I don't get caught in a hungry, vulnerable moment, then stuff myself and slide up a notch in my belt buckle.
My Solution: 
I hereby acknowledge that I've been a workaholic and will take better care of MYSELF from this moment forward!!! I don't have to wait until "after the holidays" or January 1st!!

After Thanksgiving!

'Twas the day after Thanksgiving and all through the house, machines - dishwasher, washer & drier, and vacuum - are running to help me reclaim cleanliness and order! 

Thankfully, my inner machinery is doing the same.  I'm helping it by drinking lots of water, munching on celery and being mindful about what I eat! We have so much to be grateful for ... yep, I've got a system of healthy habits that will help me stay healthy for life, but even more important, I have resources and friendships that support, cheer, and sustain me.  Thank you! Thank you for your trust, your determination, your business, and your referrals!!!

I'm looking forward to hearing from you this week.

Just a few moments ago, I was chatting with a relatively new client. When he started the Program several months ago, in order to get through doorways, he had to go sideways.  He was miserable and just wanted less pain and more life!  Today, he told me the following:
 
"People are starting to call me 'skinny!' I've melted 56 pounds off and have 100 more to go until I can have my knee surgery! The success rate of knee replacement is <5% at my original weight and I could lose my leg if surgery wasn't successful. When I get down to a healthier size, the success rate for the type of knee surgery I need is up to 92%.  I can hardly wait to begin walking my dogs again.  I have so much more energy now, I can breath again, and all my clothes are getting baggy!"

Another client shared the following: 

"It costs money to be on program ... but I found that we spent more on groceries and fast food meals when we weren't on Program.  Besides, I hated the medical and medication bills!!!"

It's Turkey Time!

Good Morning Fellow Take Shapers!
We're coming through an interesting season and it's time to remind ourselves to be compassionate and patient with ourselves!

Quick Questions:
  • How was your week on program?
  • Are you in an active weight loss, transition, or maintenance phase?
  • Have you made a temporary U-Turn into fat storage again?

​There's a part of me that wants things to happen more quickly, with more clarity, tangible results, and less angst.  Does this resonate with you too?  Why is it surprising to me that every time I try to "row upstream" or ​"grasp at straws," I find myself more distracted and further away from "home?"  As I refocus, I realize how blessed I am in this moment, recognize the creative energies all around me, and relax into life as it is unfolding.  You are part of that blessing.  I'm happy to be on this journey with you and to be serving you!

My hours have changed:
Tuesday has opened up as my primary coaching day - let me know what 15-30 min time slot you would like.  Please text me any time and call anytime if you are feeling frustrated or stuck.  Also, when you are new or doing a restart, chatting daily is still the way to go!

Why Referrals are important:
The best thing about giving and receiving referrals is that it means you are using the Medifast foods and BeSlim program as a tool to help you, are feeling a level of control and success and are wanting others to experience the hope you have found.

Having friends, family members, and coworkers doing the program with you, like any good buddy system, supports YOU, builds a buffer around YOU, and contributes to YOUR success.

What to Listen for:
  • I don't have anything to wear!
  • The holidays stress me out.
  • I'm afraid to go to the doctor
  • This weather makes me blue - feeling chubby and being obese are key factors in depression, fear of going outdoors, and the vicious cycle of eating for comfort.
  • My father just had a ________ - fill in the blank here - so many chronic and acute illnesses are a complication of obesity.

Take Good Care of Yourself!

Good Morning Take Shapers!
We will get through Thanks Giving and all the holiday parties, bazaars, family gatherings, and potentially high stress / rich food encounters! ... How are you doing??? I love getting your photos and hearing your news ... Check-in, call, text, and e-mail me frequently, especially through the upcoming holidays. 

Take good care of yourself:
Everything I read reminds me that I can't control the outcome or guarantee the results ...  the only things I have any control over are the goals I've set and the baby-steps I take daily. Here's what successful clients tell me they do to help keep themselves on track:
  • I stay focused on the process and let Dr Andersen help me.
  • Put one of Dr A's books in a place where I can read a page or two every day.  
  • Give myself the gift of grace by making healthy choices with my food, activities and self-talk!  
  • Choose to hang out with positive friends and family members ... this is a hard one!  
  • Take of moment to think about my personal vision and goals each day - once before bed and once upon arising.  
  • Keep picturing what it feels like to be my preferred slim and strong self.

Dr Andersen just sent us Four ways to give health for the holidays ... We can do this! As I've said before, sharing the program helpsyou stay accountable and focused. Read more in Dr A's Habits of Health, chapter 18, on "Building Your Support System: the Keystone to Optimal Health."  Keep in mind that we are after long-term, sustainable health and well-being.

Good Health is Contagious!

Ever notice that good health is contagious?
Once we've made the decision to be and stay healthy, it's as if the entire Universe conspires to assist us.  The reverse is also true.  Next time you hear someone complaining about their health, look at the friends and family members.  I've found that, just as misery loves company, friends with poor health seem to be surrounded by others with worse health. 

I don't think these means that we desert those dear ones who are struggling.  I'm just certain that deciding to be healthy, surround myself with others who value emotional, social, and physical health, and standing up for happiness is an essential piece to my well-being.

Which came first, the Chicken or the C-pap machine?


Sometimes I wonder how many people actually sit around thinking of different ways to ask the question, "Which came first, the chicken or the egg?"  I ran across the following article that is supposed to show that "obstructive sleep apnea appears to boost peoples craving for carbohydrates."   

I myself see it the other way around ... I feel that it was my cravings for carbohydrates that boosted my weight, led to high blood pressure and put me in need of a c-pap machine.  That was before I decided to do something about my cravings and lose weight.

Speaking of Quests ...


Speaking of "Quests" ...  I've come across a woman with a fascinating story!  Jane McGonical, in her quest to heal from a brain injury, developed a game - she decided to be a "super hero" and assigned roles and tasks to her friends and family members who were anxious to help her.  

I've been thinking about our collective quest for fitness, weight loss, gracefulness and better health ... 
  • What's your motivation? 
  • How do you define an "Epic Win?"
  • How would it feel to make it more playful?
  • What happens if you don't win?
  • What tools are you using?
  • Who are your Allies?
  • Who's your side-kick, your jester/comic relief?  Who makes you laugh?
  • How do you identify and deal with your Enemies?
  • Who do you depend on to guide you?
  • What can we do to be more engaged and successful?
  • What are you doing to increase your chances of winning this "Game?"
We are each on a Quest and can marshal our knowledge, secret super powers, and allies to help us reach our health and weight loss goals. Our friends and family members already play major roles in our personal journeys to health.  What if we assigned them "tasks" and roles to help us?  Many are helpful - they make us dinner and make us laugh.  They are excited to see us shrink down and they encourage us to get new clothes!  

Finally, the Enemies of Health and Well-being are everywhere!  People are being bombarded, bullied, burdened, and beaten down!  Their knees hurt, their pants are too tight, and they feel hopeless.  Sometimes even our friends sabotage us.  Perhaps they are afraid of the physical and emotional changes we are undergoing.  

Let's pool our energies for Mega Success to help everyone!
Congratulations on the role you are playing in real life to get yourself healthy and help the people you care about do the same!!!  I'm so delighted that so many people are becoming health coaches, helping 5-6 people do what you're doing ... There's a desperate need for more health coaches as we are literally in the battle for our lives and the health and the lives of our kids and grandkids!  It's wonderful to be on this Epic Journey with you!!!

What if I Fail?

What if I fail?

Of course we’re going to fail! Like the toddler who’s fallen down EVERY TIME he tries to stand or the kid on the bike who can’t get it to balance, trying again is what makes the difference between those who succeed and those who don’t. 

Together, we've decided not to allow obesity, shortness of breath, and sore knees, rubbing thighs, un-zippable jeans, and our inner cookie monsters to control, depress, and shorten our lives. Note to my Take Shape Clients!

All of us are in one of four modes: 
  • Actively losing excess poundage using the Medifast 5&1 program and Dr A's Habits of Health principles; 
  • Transitioning carefully to grocery purchased foods, continuing the BESLIM approach; 
  • Maintaining, using Medifast foods as healthy snacks 2-3 times a day and focusing on "eating clean and staying lean" for a life time!
  • Dieting and in the weight-gain & fat storage mode 
  • or "Oh to heck with it! My life is just to crazy and I was never very successful any way and who the heck cares???"

Poverty and Stigma: The Human Cost of Obesity

This segment of "Weight of the Nation" examines two infrequently discussed aspects of obesity in America: the impact of poverty and the experience of intolerance that "people of weight" face in their daily lives.  These disadvantages and prejudices, real and imagined, perpetuate ongoing emotional and physical trauma.  Finding solutions will require that all of us become aware and involved.  A change in attitude and a kind word can make a real difference.

She Loves Me, Yeah, Yeah, Yeah!

So, what are Greg and I singing about?

Good health, like laughter, is contagious ... though I never pictured Greg and I in psycho punk wigs singing, "She Loves Me, Yeah, Yeah," I gotta tell you it sure felt good!  We sang it for the 30 seconds that it took to get this

It's the very same feeling I get when I hear from clients:

"Wow! I feel so much better. It's not just about losing weight!"  
As clients adopt new habits and follow the Program, they experience less pain and improved ease of movement.  They report better work performance, fewer sick days and reduced need for medications. In addition, with cravings gone, they are experiencing greater mental clarity and are appreciating the compliments on their appearance. Even if they occasionally "Fall Off the Wagon," they are excited to get back on track, focus on their vision, and feel the freedom of having a workable plan. 

In my personal vision, I never imagined myself wearing a blue wig and singing the Beatles with Greg. Nor did I ever imagine that working and coaching together could bring us such joy!

Why do diets fail me?

Many people don't understand why their dieting attempts fail repeatedly, how to maintain their preferred size, and deal with cravings and bad habits. Let's talk about how we can reach out and help others ... by reaching out to others, we are really teaching ourselves. It's clear to me, that like most people who've spend a life-time being chubby or obese, I have unlimited storage capacity and I'm amazed how quickly my body can slip into the fat-storing. 

Picture it this way:
  • My body sends the signal to my brain that my cells need fuel, I feel hunger.
  • I eat a fast food meal cuz I'm not prepared.
  • I need more nutrients than that so my body asks for more.
  • Each of my cells was coated with a thin film of grease (when I was chubby) so the calories I was consuming couldn't get in to fuel the billions of cells in my body.
  • By the end of the day, every cell is screaming for fuel and sends signals to the brain: "Go Hunt! I've been starving all day! PS, skip the rabbit food, I want high octane and know there is ice cream in the freezer!"
  • After eating, if the calories don't get past the insulin resistant barriers (the thin layer of grease around the hungry cell), the liver kicks into gear.
  • The liver must deal with the elevated, circulating blood sugars. The liver will filter the unused energy and convert them from sugar in the blood stream to a more stable substance ... picture Crisco!
  • And, voila! The crisco like substances have to go into storage. And, we have unlimited storage capacity! The problem of high blood sugar has been solved, the sugars are converted to fat and stored every where ... from chins to belly, internal organs to arms, hips, and thighs. 
  • But, my cells still didn't get the fuel they needed, are still sending the "Go Hunt!" signals, and I'm still HUNGRY!
  • So, I can feel like I haven't eaten much but still be heavier every morning!
Thankfully, the Medifast foods, the Take Shape program, and your Health Coach can help reverse this fat-storage trend!!! Been there, Done that!!

Mother & Daughter, Another Example of Hope!

The decisions we make and the actions we take impact the results and life we get to lead. Having been a chubby teen, I know first hand the feelings of frustration, confusion, and depression feeling fat can bring.

Dire warnings about soy? Not so fast!







We hear a lot of dire warnings about the foods we eat ... 
Have you noticed that those warnings seldom target the favorite goodies marketed by big business - the profiteers of the cookies, sodas and junk foods that promote illness and obesity?  One of my favorite sources of protein, soy, is targeted often so when I came across the article by Dr Gregor, I decided to share it with you!
Breast cancer survivors who eat soy foods, for example, have a significantly lower likelihood of cancer recurrence. A 2012 review looked at the three studies done to date on the link between soy and breast cancer survival. It showed that women who ate the most soy had a 29% lower risk of dying from breast cancer and a 36% lower risk of cancer recurrence. A fourth study has since been published that reaffirms these results. With an average intake of soy phytonutrients above 17 mg/day—the amount found in about a cup of soymilk—the mortality of breast cancer may be reduced by as much as 38%. 
In my video, BRCA Breast Cancer Genes and Soy, you can see a five-year survival curve for Chinese women with breast cancer. After two years, all of the breast cancer survivors that ate lots of soy were still alive, while only about two-thirds of the women who ate the least amount of soy were alive. After five years, 90% of the tofu lovers were still alive and kicking, whereas half of the tofu haters had kicked the bucket. There is a similar relationship between breast cancer survival and soy protein intake, as opposed to just soy phytonutrient intake.  Click Here to read more.
