Coach Training Available Online

I have a confession ... I am not the most techie kid on the block ... I'm old enough to remember my first attempt at writing a sentence on a computer ... when I came to the end of the line, I pushed the "Return" key. The three people hanging over my shoulder told me I didn't need to do that and I was amazed as the computer did its magic. I also remember my first experiences with email ... I wasn't sure I would ever find it useful! How about you? Do you love good tools?
The benefit of excellent tools for in depth education is nothing new, however ... here's another confession ... I've been hesitant to use the new webinars. Not anymore! So much training and coaching is available online - Click Here to take a short and incredibly helpful tour of the materials available to Coaches! I love being able to access and share these concepts and skills. I have many favorites and love being on the live events throughout the week.

Let me know your favorites!!!

Crazy how much quicker I am losing weight after baby #2!

I met my goal of walking 5 miles on the treadmill this week!

Meet the Saboteurs!

Ever hear something like this:
  • You look great ... but you aren't going to lose any more are you? Even though you are still carrying 30# of stored fuel in your belly!
  • Isn't it dangerous to be losing so quickly? And you're thinking the consistent weight loss of 1-3 pounds per week, though incredible, is kinda slow!
  • Have just one bite ... one bite won't hurt you!  Would I rather be fat or rude?
  • I'd rather eat real food ... Hmm, like chips and dip, soda and pie? How's that working for you?
  • Isn't that expensive? It's just food and much less expensive than the cost of prescriptions, frustration, and former bad eating habits!
  • I could NEVER do a program like "that!" ... as if you were cheating mother nature!!!
Forgive me if I sound a little sarcastic - I don't mean to, but I hear some of these comments all the time! Then I remember, timing is everything ... it took time for me to wrap my head around connecting with a Health Coach, getting on Program, and believing that I could become sustainably slim and healthy. I had to realize that I was not fat ... I was simply carrying around too much stored fuel. I'm beyond grateful to have found a system for tapping into it, using it up and reclaiming the stamina and health I had as a teen.

Holiday Tips: Fill up with Laughter!

Laughter really is the best medicine!

Filling yourself up with the company of good friends and rollicking laughter will fill you up and intercept the gnawing "hunger" that we often feel this time of year ...

Just 15 minutes of laughter increased the level of pain tolerance by 10% and the kind of laughter that works best is a belly aching laugh that usually only happens when you are with others.

The goal is to experience "A rattling good laugh with friends!"

We are Real! Poignant Endorsement for our weight loss/health gain program

This made me tear up ... I meet people like this all the time! Enjoy!!

Poignant Endorsements in Weight-Loss Campaign

The three largest weight loss companies offer contrasting approaches to slimming down, but when it comes to marketing, they are identical in one way: they all hire celebrity endorsers.
In a commercial for Medifast, Kimberley Vandlen speaks to herself after she lost 50 pounds. “You look beautiful, you do,” says Ms. Vandlen, as she tries not to cry.

The current roster of famous pound-shedders includes Jennifer Hudson for Weight Watchers, Marie Osmond for Nutrisystem and Valerie Bertinelli for Jenny Craig.
Now another weight loss company, Medifast, is introducing an advertising campaign that eschews celebrities.
A new commercial opens on a woman named Kimberley Vandlen, who is overweight, standing in a kitchen speaking to a woman whose back is to the camera.
“You look beautiful, you do,” says Ms. Vandlen, choking back tears. “You look so beautiful.”
After text flashes on the screen that says, “Kimberley discusses weight loss,” the camera shifts to face the other woman, and new text appears on the screen: “With herself.”
That woman, it turns out, is also Ms. Vandlen, but almost 50 pounds lighter — and radiant. Voice quavering, the thinner Ms. Vandlen says, “This is all you.”
Her two versions, thanks to crafty editing, face each other in the same frame and appear to converse in real time.
Heavier Ms. Vandlen: “I never thought I could look like that. Thank you.”
Thinner Ms. Vandlen: “Thank you for wanting it.”
The commercial, which closes with the tagline, “Become yourself,” is by Solve, an independent advertising and branding agency in Minneapolis. It will be introduced on television and online on Jan. 1, along with spots featuring two other Medifast dieters — another woman and a man — conversing with thinner versions of themselves.
Aimed primarily at women aged 35 to 64, the commercials will run widely on networks including A&E, Lifetime and the Food Network. Print ads will appear in publications including People, Better Homes & Gardens and Cooking Light.
“We just feel like people don’t connect as much with celebrities,” said Brian Kagen, chief marketing officer of Medifast. “Because they know that perhaps the celebrities also may have had a personal trainer or a personal chef, which normal people don’t have.”
Medifast, which declined to reveal how much it would spend on the campaign, spent $25.5 million on advertising in the first nine months of 2012, behind Jenny Craig, with $39.5 million; Weight Watchers, with $200 million; and Nutrisystem, with $208.4 million, according Kantar Media, which is owned by WPP.
The new campaign was set in motion in the fall of 2011, when the agency, with the help of a casting director who specializes in finding nonactors for commercials, began seeking consumers who wanted to lose weight.
(Ms. Vandlen has in the past auditioned for commercials, but had never been cast in one, and her Medifast spots, like others in the campaign, were unscripted.)
Along with compensation, the brand offered free Medifast portion-controlled food products, which are integral to the program, along with the telephone and online consultations with dietitians and nutritionists available to typical Medifast customers.
Four people were selected, and were first filmed before they started the Medifast diet at a private home in Studio City, Calif., in January 2012. All were filmed speaking to a Medifast nutritionist, and were directed to converse with the nutritionist as if they were speaking with their future, thinner selves.
Of the four subjects, the three that lost the most weight were called back to the same house in September. Right before filming began, each was for the first time shown footage from the interview recorded in January.
“They put the computer in front of me, and I said, ‘I can’t believe you’re going to do that,’ ” Ms. Vandlen said in a recent interview, recalling seeing the footage of her prediet self.
“I broke down in tears,” she said, “because I remember ‘that’ girl, and I remember how badly she was feeling and not wanting to get up from the couch or play with my daughter because my knees would ache or ankles would ache.”

When the cameras began rolling, she and the nutritionist swapped places, and this time the nutritionist fed Ms. Vandlen her own words back to her so that she was, effectively, having a conversation with her heavier self.
All of the commercials were shot and edited to leave no trace of the nutritionist, only the dieter at different weights.
“Some of it was hard to watch,” said John Colasanti, the chief executive of Solve, about being on the set. “To watch these people bare their souls, you felt like kind of a voyeur.”
Mr. Colasanti added that, while the weight loss was certainly evident in the commercials, the dieters were chosen based on their passion for trimming down for health and emotional reasons beyond vanity.
“To think about weight loss as something that’s going to be added to your life rather than deducted from it was sort of the germ of the idea,” Mr. Colasanti said. “It isn’t what you lose, it’s what you gain.”
Jay Jacobs, who lost 181 pounds competing on the 11th season of “The Biggest Loser,” and who is also a managing partner of the Shurn Group, a wellness branding firm, reviewed the new Medifast commercials and was impressed.
“I think they’re brilliant because they feel authentic,” Mr. Jacobs said. “They didn’t feel staged, they didn’t feel trite — they were all very believable, and that’s what’s going to make them resonate with people.”
John LaRosa, research director of Marketdata Enterprises, a market research company in Tampa, Fla., lauded Medifast for ignoring what he called the “follow the leader” mentality of celebrity marketing by weight loss companies.
Mr. LaRosa reviewed the new campaign, which he called clever.
“It’s going to be a campaign that gets some notice and gains some traction,” Mr. LaRosa said of the new Medifast commercials. “And it cost them a hell of a lot less because they don’t have to pay celebrities millions of dollars.”  From the New York Times, Dec 19th

 Photographing Strangers
My focus this week is on relationships and I was delighted when this came to me from a FaceBook friend.

Your Assignment: Keep thinking about the importance of relating, repeating, and reframing!

This photographer selected total strangers and had them pose for a moment ... the results are delightful!

Veteran's Day Note from 2011

Good Morning!
My thoughts have been focused on our Veterans ... especially my dad and my father-in-law ... They gave a firm foundation and understanding about what it means to be of service to others, both were full of integrity and humor and are sorely missed.

There are two more thoughts that I have been exploring:
  1. The US military recruiters are turning away 27% of the potential recruits (9 Million young people this year!) because they are too heavy to enlist.  See today's posts on the topic on this site.
  2. Each of us is a veteran of the war on personal chubbiness and have been in the Yo-Yo Dieting Trenches!  Thank goodness for Take Shape for Life, my Health Coach, the Program, and Dr A's Habits of Health!!!
I hope you have been following my posts on "30 Days of Hope and Inspiration. You can find them here and on FaceBook.

We've been busy writing and posting all week long - you can check out this week's posts on Tracking Your ProgressFavorite Recipes, and a delightful note written by Greg called Waste Basket vs Waist Basket.

Here's my Favorite Quotes of the Week:
This is so amazing!  I've been on blood pressure meds since 1982 ... this week, my doctor told me to only take half and in a month, we can consider taking me off of it all together!!
Being on Program is saving me lots of money ... I know what I'm going to eat and when.  We are eating out less and becoming more active every day!
Thank you for helping me recommit and for sharing the holiday tips.
I tacked my chubby pants to my bathroom wall, they remind me to be proud of myself and keep my focus.
Purchasing my food for a month at a time really freaked me out at first ... until I began to run low!  Also,  my husband had an amazing insight. He talked me to about how many people, when faced with a terminal illness, would do anything to get that time back, and anything to fix it, AND how we have the opportunity to AVOID it if we do this NOW. This means we don't have to have regrets that we didn't do all we could when we could.  And since when faced with a stroke, or heart attack, or amputation, or blindness from diabetes, we would be willing to do or spend anything to make it better, we figure we are making it better now, and hopefully just avoiding it.

Have a fabulous week!  Check in today and as often as you need to!!!   Polly.

What do men need to succeed?

How do early relationships provide for a happy, long life? They make all the difference!

I want to note here that I've always loved and appreciated my mother and father-in-law ... in fact I tell friends that the reason I was able to enter into marriage at the tender age of 20 after a four and a half month, long-distance courtship was because I'd met his family and seen how he treated his mom!

So, what do men require for a long healthy life? Check out this Harvard study. It proves what we know instinctively: the love of parents matters and a man's relationship with his mother plays a key role in his future success as an independent, noble, and and successful human being. (Thank you Marla!!)

And what do relationships have to do with successful weight loss, health gain and sustainable vitality? EVERYTHING!!! That's why we're here, that's why our clients do so well.  Call us when you're ready to reclaim your health ... and, if you're interested in becoming a Certified Health Coach, we're interested in helping you with that too.

Weekly Celebration ... Let's do a Happy Dance!

There are so many reasons to celebrate ...
One coach shared that she jumps up and does a "Happy Dance" every hour or two - it gives her an excuse to move & smile, and helps her pace through her day. Each time she completes a task, she does her Happy Dance to "tie the knot," celebrate each tiny step in the process of meeting goals, and "clear the air" in preparation for the next step.  She says, "It's like football, we all need to dance and reassess at half-time!"  If you haven't checked in recently - here's your reminder - check in and share how you are feeling and what you are celebrating.

I cringe when I hear someone say, "I'm fat!" What people don't realize is that "they" aren't fat, they are simply malnourished and are carrying too much fat around. Please share with them that being hungry and feeling like their cookie monster is out of control has a very reasonable, physiological explanation!! In most cases, they are NOT lacking in motivation or self-discipline ... they are simply hungry and suffering from some degree of insulin resistance.Click Here to read more. Thank you for teaming up with me to "Get the job done" for yourself and the people you care about. Thank you for the referrals!!!

Speaking of yummy food, Check out our Client Support Page. There are so many recipes and ideas!!! This is a great time to spice things up so that you can face the holiday eating frenzy with confidence!  Keep focusing on the health you are gaining and why it's so important to you!!!

I'll be posting notes on Holiday Survival several times per week in Our Blog and on FaceBook throughout the upcoming weeks - check back often - share what's working for you!!!

If you have questions about personal health issues or physical changes you're feeling - let me know right away.  If you're on medications, be sure to check in with your practitioner frequently - he/she may need to adjust your dosage as you adjust your girth.  Also, when you have questions on ordering, transitioning and maintaining, contact me as needed!

Be sure to take advantage of the weekly Support Calls. These calls are designed to help all of us through all phases of the program ... they are live and interactive.

Favorite Quotes this week:
I'm already feeling leaner and less clogged - physically and mentally.

I've always hated vegges ... (I know! And this is one of the reasons our bodies begin to hunger for nourishment and put the junkie stuff and fast foods we've consumed "in storage" as chubbiness!! Start your love affair with vegges today ... this you assignment ... and you've done tougher things!!)

I put up a calendar in my bathroom like you suggested. I noted my starting weight in Sept and then put that weight minus the first five pounds for a week later then I put 2 pounds less for each week after that. I am way ahead of the game on my 8th week I can't believe it!  I'm so excited.

I am sleeping and feeling so much better ... I just can't explain it, my mother said, "Where did you get all this energy?"

I'm getting the routine down now. This is so easy as long as I eat on time and drink enough water.

I went to my closet and found something that is too big and gave it away. This is the first of many.

Today's photo is of DS, a veteran of the US Navy who served on a nuclear submarine ... he made the decision to regain his health and started working with a TSFL Health Coach in March of this year.  He's down 60# ... what a difference it's made in his life.  Have a look at what recruiters are saying about how the epidemic of obesity is effecting the pool of military applicants, Too Fat to Serve ... together, we can turn this around!!!

Have a Great Week, Check in often, and again, thanks for the many referrals!  I love working with your friends and family too!!!

According to USA Today, the military now considers obesity a global security threat!

Retired military leaders say this generation is Still too fat to fight!
They note that 27% of the young recruits who actually come in to sign up (that's over 9 Million young people!), are too heavy and pose too much of a health risk to qualify for military service!!!

Today's youth can not serve in the armed forces because they are not physically fit. If we keep up at this rate of obesity, we will not have enough people to fight for our country!

Let's reverse this and have the healthiest army in the world!

Are We Having Fun Yet?

Greg and I are "playing" a game of appreciation.  We've committed to sitting together for a few minutes each evening for 7 days and saying (and writing down!) 10 things we appreciate about each other. This has been one of the most thoughtful and inspiring mini adventures of our 41 years of marriage!!!

We are on day four and I'm coming up with all kinds of things to add to the list tonight. We found the instructions in the life changing book, The Passion Test by Janet Attwood and Chris Attwood.

Want to give it a try??? Let me know you are doing it and let's compare notes and outcomes ... There are a number of things I didn't know ... for instance, Greg really appreciates how I fold his T-shirts, "I love opening my drawer and seeing all my clean folded shirts ... it's one of the ways I know you care about me."
A Couple in NY

Here are some quotes and photos from a lovely website I found that takes the theme another step.  Enjoy!

“What’s your favorite thing about him?” “No matter what, he makes the best of it.”

“What’s your favorite thing about her?”

“Her sense of adventure.”
“What’s the most romantic thing he’s ever done?”  “Oh God, he’s hopeless. During our first year of marriage, he celebrated our anniversary every single month.”

So what's this got to do with coaching, losing weight and gaining health?  Both health and coaching are all about relationships! If our goal is to have happiness, vitality, wealth, and success, we will make the most progress when we have fun and do it together!!!

Johns pants fell down at work ... He's put 10 notches in his belt and needs a new one. My husband's life have this has changed so much. Now I know that I can do this too!
I am feeling lighter, in a physical and perhaps metaphysical way as well.
I'm loving Maintenance!
I just want you to know how much I've appreciated your support and feedback this past week.  It made this time of transition so much better, as I was able to understand why I was feeling the way I was -- rather than going into the " it's punishment for all the times you've eaten inappropriately" mode, which is usually what happens.

My first week on Program has actually been one of loving self-acceptance and encouragement.  Thanks for your help, now I see this as the beginning of an exciting  journey toward health and vitality, rather than submission to a long path lined with days of deprivation.  I am so grateful!

Nancy Pettit's Amazing Journey to Health!

My dear friend, Nancy Pettit presented at a small training session last weekend ... here is her story!

How I Gained It: It’s not like I woke up one morning to suddenly find myself fat, frumpy and frazzled; I’d been like that for a lifetime. As a kid, family meals were large and included home-baked bread, cookies and pie. I was a chubby grade-schooler with an insatiable appetite and seemed drawn to carbohydrates and fat.
Weight was a frequent topic with my mom and grandma. They talked about dieting regularly and yet all family members except my father were overweight or obese. My dieting career began in sixth grade when my mom and I started using candy-like caramels to be eaten with a cup of hot water or tea about half an hour before meals for appetite-suppression. I counted calories and spent summers at fat camp; once school resumed, I spent money earned babysitting on corn nuts or shoestring potatoes from the school vending machine and made frequent stops at the drug store for candy bars or a chocolate sundae from the Dairy Queen on my walk home from school.

I was mortified to be the heaviest girl in the classroom and was frequently nagged by my mom about my weight. She said things like "Fat girls don't dance…Boys don't ask fat girls out on dates…You’re going to have your picture taken so stand up straight and suck it in…Get on the scale and let’s see how much damage you’ve done.”
Dieting and binging became my pattern; I’d be "good” for a while by skipping meals or only having liquid shakes, and then reward myself with candy and ice cream.

I did all kinds of fad diets. In anticipation of my wedding and the ensuing photographs, my mother told me about a clinic in town that offered diet shots with a 500 calorie diet plan. I was accustomed to dieting for special occasions and looked great in my size 12 wedding dress. After the honeymoon, I blew out of my trousseau and went right back to construction worker-sized servings!

Then I heard about a diet doctor who had a program using "rainbow pills" and started his regime. Each week I got four envelopes containing red, yellow, blue and green pills, each to be taken at various times of the day along with a very low calorie diet. I didn't feel well, but behaved around food and lost weight. When I was unable to continue to afford the pills, my weight rapidly returned.

Over the next two decades, my aunt and grandma paid for me to go to several dieting centers, but my pattern was predictable: get on a diet for a special occasion, get off the diet, repeat. We spent thousands of dollars for program fees, medication and diet food. In 1991, I talked my husband into enrolling in a diet program but once I reached my goal weight of 140 pounds, I celebrated by porking-out and couldn’t get back in the diet groove.

For the next few years, I half-heartedly dieted with always the same results: I'd lose weight initially, then feel hungry and moody and become unable to sustain the diet long enough to reach and maintain a healthy weight.

As my life went by, I began to view my weight as a kind of life-long punishment I was doomed to endure. I thought there was something very wrong with me.
Since I had escalating blood sugar, high blood pressure and high cholesterol, my physician warned me that it was a matter of time before I developed full-blown diabetes. Plantar fasciitis in my feet, arthritis in my hips and knees and an auto-immune disorder chipped away at my health. The quality of my life was lousy, and my poor example and meal preparations contributed to the health and weight problems of my husband and daughter; they were obese, too.
I was referred by my family physician for bariatric surgery, but without the support of my husband or family, I resigned myself to living out my days forever fat and frumpy.

Breaking Point: One morning I had a meltdown in my closet while scrounging for something to wear that would fit and cried out, “Lord! Anybody! Make me thinner!”
It dawned on me that no one can make anyone else get healthier; that is a decision each of us must make ourselves. In the recesses of the closet, I had a heart-to-heart with myself and asked, “Who’s running your life, Nancy? You or your food?”

I made a decision to dump diets and get on with making the best of the rest of my life.

How I Lost It: Providentially, at church that weekend I heard about the Take Shape For Life Program from a friend who'd quickly lost 35 pounds. I decided to begin the program with my family’s blessing, determined to follow through to the best of my ability.

Working with a health coach and eating small meals at regular intervals seemed to be the ticket for me; I felt clear-headed, my moodiness waned and my energy-level remained consistent throughout the day. The program utilizes portion-controlled meal replacements and specific vegetable and protein selections that require minimal preparation. I felt "safe" when it came to meal preparation, because I knew which vegetables and lean protein portions would keep me feeling fuller, longer.

The first couple of weeks I was on the program, I went to bed really early because I couldn’t hack the food commercials! To avoid driving by the gauntlet of the fast-food restaurants, I took a different route to work. We pared down the pantry, kept nothing but program-friendly food in the house and avoided restaurants for anything other than occasionally meeting a friend for a pot of tea or a cup of coffee. I planned meals for the week, made a grocery list and kept a journal with the rule "If I bite it, I write it.” Each night before bed, I planned out my food for the next day.

Within a couple weeks, my face, hands and ankles were less puffy and I felt good. When I was six weeks into the program I had an appointment to see my doctor. At that check-up I weighed 267 pounds, my clothes were looser and I felt great, better than I had for months. From that day on, I felt very hopeful and confident that I would be able to continue forward on my health path. I took my measurements and began to record my weight in my journal.

By October 2002 I was in "one-derland" -- I weighed 199! I had not been in the 100-pound range for years. I knew I would be able to sustain the program because I did not want to ever go back to feeling the way I used to feel. It felt good to be me and to be in charge of my life! I sailed through the holidays and on into the healthy New Year. I was hungry for health and it tasted so very good!

The weight-loss phase gave me the opportunity to appreciate and practice a new way to approach food. Rather than holding onto the mindset I was on a short-term diet, I determined in my closet that spring day that food would no longer run my life; this was the last time I would be on a diet or weight-loss program ever again. I was on a quest for health. I wanted to feel better, to move better, to look better and to be better!

Half the woman I used to be, I’d shed 135 pounds and reached a healthy weight. I slowly reintroduced various food groups that I’d temporarily set aside during the weight-loss phase and gradually increased calories and my physical activities during transition and maintenance.

While weight loss may be the entry point for many people, Take Shape for Life offers so much more; it is a lifestyle program with a complete array of support, including one-on-one personal guidance by a health coach experienced with the program and meals. I am deeply thankful for Dr. Wayne Scott Andersen, co-founder of Take Shape for Life. From this caring physician I learned the structure of eating every three hours and developed skills that formed healthy habits and behaviors that resulted in permanent weight management.

Every aspect of my life has changed, from how I look and where I shop, to what I can physically do and how I feel about myself. I went from flabby to fabulous! I can wear my wedding ring, I can fit in the bathtub, I can bend over and tie my own shoes, I can walk through a turnstile without standing sideways, I can fit into an airplane seat with no extenders and fit into the bathroom compartment on a plane. No more pull-on elastic stretchy waist plus-size jeans for me -- I can wear real zip-up jeans and a cool belt!
Now, I like having my picture taken and don’t have to suck it in. I am physically active and actually enjoy it. I can walk to neighborhood shops and use the elliptical machine daily, attend step-aerobics and strength-training classes at the local YMCA and participate in 5K walk/runs.
I learned how to manage a healthy weight by incorporating daily habits of health. Because I’ve managed a lower weight and active lifestyle for over nine years, my doctor said I lowered my risk for disease.
Charles M. Schultz said, “Life is like a 10 speed bicycle. Most of us have gears we never use.”

Now that I am in my sizzlin’ sixties, I feel like I am finally coming into my own; I am riding the path of my own destiny and using new gears I never knew existed.
