Taking Off the Last 5, 10, 20 Pounds ...

I really appreciate feedback from clients I haven't heard from for a year or two ... I continue to be available to you and love learning from you.

JC wrote that he's at his lowest but still six pounds above his goal ... Those last few pounds are a bit more resistant to being used up because: 
  1. they've been "around" for a long, long time. 
  2. when we are close to goal, the remaining fat represents a larger percentage of our body size. 
  3. we may be in a rut and need to be a little more flamboyant in our cooking and seasoning or ...
  4. old habits from our previous attempts at "sweat and starve" dieting may be sneaking in.
Call me, I'll share what I know, connect you with resources, and cheer you on ... I continue to be available to you as needed.

I'm including Greg's weight loss graph ... you can see that the pounds came off quickly and consistently. Then he met his goal, transitioned, and began to slide back up in the summer months - granted, lots of things were happening like company, a sick relative, and a few trips. I'm happy to report that he made the decision to recommit to the program in January of 2010, brought his weight under his target and has successfully kept it below target for the past three years.

In maintenance, it takes daily attention to stay slim ... we move more, use smaller plates, eat vegges often, drink lots of water and never allow ourselves to get hungry.  Along with our healthy food choices, we use one or two nutrition packed Medifast meals each day - I generally have an oatmeal in the am and a bag of BBQ bites late in the evening. Greg has a bar mid-day and a choc pudding before bedtime. When we travel, we take most of our meals with us and buy fresh fruits and vegges to stock up the hotel fridge ... eating more than one restaurant meal per day puts weight on very quickly for me! Remember the acronym, "BESLIM!"

It's important to know what turns your "Insulin Pump" on and pushes your weight up! Just as it's important to understand what keeps you slim and fit!

In the Game for the long term!

We are each engaged in the pursuit of health for the long term! Even though being part of the Take Shape for Life program is fun, gets us connected, helps us feel better quickly, and works rapidly, this is not a game or a diet or a quick temporary fix. At first, clients seek us out for weight loss.  Once the pounds start melting and they are feeling better, they come to the wonderful realization that we are coaching for optimal health at every age and every stage of life! 

As I said, we are in it for the long term benefits of looking and feeling better - of having our clothes fit, being able to go up stairs easily and get down on the floor to play with kids and grands.  We want to come off medications that are outstripping our budgets and avoid the need for prescriptions to deal with the side effects of the first medications. We want health, vitality, longevity, and well-being!

Our soul purpose at Health Coach resource is to help you establish those goals, take the baby steps needed daily to make progress, then reach and keep the rewards of a lean and flexible body. Above all, we are here to help you build new habits on this incredible journey to optimal health.

Are You on an Epic Journey?

I have been reading a lot about the concept of "Passion" lately. One helpful book is Aspire: Discovering Your Purpose Through the Power of Words by Kevin Hall. As you read on, think about your own passions ... what's worth fighting for? What brings you joy?

In Chapter four of Aspire, Kevin tells the story of Chad Hymas, a quadriplegic, who decided to reclaim his health and carve out a new life as an inspirational speaker.  After 18 months of relearning how to sit up, feed and care for himself, he begins an adventure on a three wheeled bike through the desert from Salt Lake City to Las Vegas. 


Kevin describes the stages of Chad's epic journey ... in the beginning there was a sense of nervous eagerness, filled with lots of attention and excitement. As Chad sets off, he is escorted through town by friends, family, and local police. Pedaling his bike with his forearms, Chad bikes through frigid nights and blistering days just four inches above the scorching pavement.  At one point he's invaded (literally!) by hordes of crickets. Of course, there are endless hills, fatigue, hunger, and self doubt. There are dark moments of indecision and depression. Like all accounts of personal heroism, Chad presses onward until he crests the finial hill and sees Las Vegas in the distance. At that point, the crowds turn out again, his family has flown in to cheer him on, strangers swarm the streets, everyone is applauding and there's great fanfare. Chad goes on to become one of those incredible speakers who inspire us to find and follow our passions! 

The suffering experienced and passion required, when undertaking any epic journey (think: shedding 35, 65, 100+ pounds!), is beautifully described. It reminds me of the many wonderful individuals we've met in the last five years who have made the decision to pursue a healthier life with our Take Shape for Life program. I've had the honor of engaging, connecting, and witnessing the decision making process, the excitement, worries, and self doubt. The struggles make the triumphs even sweeter!!!  And the "rest of the story" isn't that we've "finally arrived," it's that we've learned how to persue our dreams.  We've gained new tools, habits and insights.  We've gained a new sense of self, a new support system, and a new vision of the life we want to live. I am so humbled and grateful to be a part of this epic journey! 

Congratulations all around to each of you, to each of us who hold the goal of reclaiming our health and especially to those who help others do the same!

Can the weight come off even though I sit all day?

Meet Don, he is a Walmart truck driver who lost 65 lbs using our program. He lost his weight while sitting down all day long, day after day, driving his truck. He feels so good he started carrying a bicycle in the trailer so he could ride it around parking lots during each delivery. He is such a great success story and a transformed life.

"Soft " Words Don't Help!

This has been an incredible week! We received six referrals and helped seven new clients get started!!! This is all because of each of you - you are attending to your personal health journey and reaching out to help others reclaim their health too.  Greg and I are sooo proud of you!  Each step you take, each healthy habit you practice, and each triumph you achieve, is a beacon of light for the next person who's looking for what each of us has found. Just think, lighting a match is easy ... the match isn't hot, nor is it heavy ... It lights our way and lights the next candle thus igniting understanding and hope as the light gets passed along. Nicole's Story ... I Changed My Mind!

Nicole started transition several weeks ago after shedding 100 pounds ...  I just love this photo!! Here's part of a beautiful note I received from her last spring when she was still 40 pounds from her goal:

"My sister is getting married in November. I am the maid of honor.  She mentioned her other two bridesmaids and I know both of them are taller than me and thin, as is my sister. I started to have a little bit of anxiety about being the short, fat bridesmaid because it is what I have always thought of myself... It took me a few minutes before I started to smile.  I changed my mind. I am going to be the short, HOT bridesmaid. I expect to be at my goal weight by then, if not, close to it!  

I will be the girl who worked for it. It doesn't come naturally to me. I don't have the skinny gene. Through it all, I feel much more confident in this body God gave me."

Congratulations Nicole! You've not only changed your mind, you've also changed your body, your future and the future of your children!!!

Candace's Story!

What if we are being given exactly what we need?

Living a vibrant life looks like this to me!
The journey which began as a weight loss effort, stemming from a desire to shed obesity and gain better physical health, has had many exponential side-effects. The journey to better physical health leads to better emotional and financial health as well. 

Clients report that, not only do they feel better, sleep more soundly, and have less pain, they also experience an improvement in relationships, Sudoku scores, job performance, and the ability to "flat get things done!" I've had clients send me "Before and After" photos of their desks!!!

As intentional healing takes place, each fully integrated client begins to look closely at their "Purpose for Being" and begins to identify and understand their deepest desires, talents, and strengths. Consider this radical experiment for the next three weeks ... Ask yourself, "What if Life (call It what you will) is on your side?" 

Here's your assignment: For three weeks, assume that all of creation is conspiring to give you exactly what you need, exactly when you need it. At least once every day, speak these words with passionate sincerity: "I believe that reality is a sublime comedy staged for my education and amusement, and that there is a benevolent conspiracy to liberate me from my ignorance and help transform me into the unique masterpiece I was born to be." (Bob Brezsny, 2004.) 

Go through these steps: state your need clearly, set out with intention, be open to opportunities (the "answer" may look slightly different, so keep your eyes and ears open), and expect the best. Share your results! I can't wait to hear from you!!

What Results Are You Wanting to Create?

What are the results that you want to create ... What do they feel like and how will you know you are on the right track? 

In an effort to address these questions, we worked on "Vision Boards" this past week ... each time I do this activity, I gain more clarity about what I want in my life, how I want to live and who I want to be.

Before we started, we each took a brief inventory of what we wanted to be feeling, doing, and sharing. We jotted notes on what we wanted to have, keep, be paid for doing, and give away. We thought about what we wanted to learn, receive, and let go of . We also considered where we wanted to go and what we wanted to experience.

So, the question for today is: What are the results that you want to create ... What do they feel like and how will you know you are on the right track?

If you're not sure how to approach this, open up Dr A's Habits of Health and breeze through chapter 2. You'll also enjoy his opening letter on page xxi and chapter 2 in Dr Andersens' newest best seller, Discover Your Optimal Health.
