Tuesday's Team Note

Working with a Team has many rewards!
Good Morning Team,
This is going out to our entire team - we are so excited and can feel the energy and passion and joy that you bring to the team - Thank you soooo much!

We're in the last five days of the month which frequently brings with it an opportunity to stretch as we reach towards goals and intentions.
Creating health, offering hope, witnessing the profound changes people are experiencing is the most fun I've ever had!!!

I must admit that catching babies for 28 years was wonderful when I wasn't exhausted and away from my family for days at a time!! ... But in all those years, I never had an opportunity to be part of the entire trilogy of health - physical, mental, and financial wellness.  And, it's time to step up the game, increase the fun ... it's time to work smarter with more passion, fun, and joy than ever before.

A little light came on after a presentation last weekend ... We had gathered three women who each needed the program but weren't ready to make a change!  They needed the program but weren't ready to engage and start the process and didn't want what we had to offer. The lesson for me: We are looking for the individuals who need us and are ready to make the change - those folks are really out there!  Many are feeling hopeless and may not believe you at first.  Just keep showing up and radiating that wonderful smile and willingness to help them!  Sometimes we have to ask them to trust us for a week until they are ready to trust it for themselves!

We have some wonderful examples leading the way ... listen to last night's leadership call again, 512-5-5-6854 ... I'm asking myself, "What are they doing that I can do? What's my next step?" I just had a conversation with David Miller ... David pointed out that the young leaders on last night's call are:
  1. having fun and talking about it.  They are posting the playfulness and excitement on FaceBook and sharing with everyone as they travel, shop, and go out and about.
  2. using all the tools so that they can work smarter rather than harder.
So questions:
  1. Is it fun to be healthier?
  2. Is it fun to run along side someone who is burning though fat, reinventing themselves, and claiming better physical health?
  3. Is it fun to help someone gain healthier thinking and healthier finances?????
  4. Can we get passionate and increase the fun we are having and increase the number of people we are helping as a result???
David reminded me that people know all about the "work hard for little reward" world ... Are we different? Are we having and sharing the fun, hope and inspiration or do my "I've got to work harder" habits hold me back and set an unattractive example???

New Tools:
  • All new coaches get the "Launching Your Health Coach Business" ... Greg and I are working our way through it step by step and contemplating how to assist each new coach to grasp the concepts, grow quickly, and thrive.

Monday's Check-in Note for Clients and Coaches 03/25/13

Good Morning!!!
It's time to check in again ... emails, phone calls, and texts ... whatever works!!! This is going out to our friends and clients who are in pursuit of better health with us and who are engaged in learning Dr A's Habits of Health!

As we all know, losing excess weight is the second step ... first, we change our thinking and re-set our compass.  Second, we use the 5&1 system to burn through our excess fat. Third, we incorporate the "Habits of Health" and transition into a world of whole, healthy food appreciation that we've never had before!  And we do it on purpose, together, and with the intention to reach out and help others do it too.

Thank you for all the referrals this week!  We are really delighted to be helping friends, family members, patients, and colleagues!!!  We know that every client is sharing and coaching (however discretely) ... remember to say you're working with Greg and I ... if you send them to Medifast, they may think we're all about "diet food" ... we'll help them through the entire program so they Take Shape for Life!
News Blast:
TSFL has now created 4 new Variety Packs for us!!! Yahoo!!! (Variety Packs ship more quickly and save money)
  • Medifast Favorites
  • Chocolate Lovers
  • Gluten Free Favorites
  • On The Go Favorites
Yes, the price has gone up 30 cents per day.  Hopefully, you have received an email from corporate already that explains when and how the price increases will effect us.  If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to call me, 503-313-4820 or client support at 1.800.572.4417.
The change is in response to increases of cost of living, price of fuel and raw materials.  TSFL only needed to increase the price of each box by 45 cents...that's only 30 cents per day while on the 5&1 program.

Wendy wrote: What is your all time favorite meal replacement?  If you are interested in taking advantage of a little extra savings before the increases? Case pricing on your favorites (shakes are not included) will be available until April 2, 2013.  You will get 12 boxes in a case for $178.20 compared to $198 for 12 single boxes (before the increase).  I am going to stock up on my Caramel Nut Bars!!!

Favorite Quotes:
Feeling good!  -2 more lbs!!!

I am noticing that I feel better.  I am more confident and happier.  Even though my daughter has (grown), I can pick her up easier.  It is easier to say no to foods now and my pants are always getting looser, not tighter.  I am feeling better.  I feel like I can lose this weight and be a healthier person.

I even made a vision board with the things I envision for myself.  One of the things...  I have never been able to wear knee-high boots with a skirt or with skinny jeans.  They never zip up on my calves no matter how much stretchy material they have on the sides.  I feel like I can envision myself in skinny jeans and knee-high boots someday soon.

I'm becoming a TSFL Health Coach because I have a passion for health!
I was tired of being broke doing what I no longer had passion for (Real Estate).
I want to achieve financial independence to take very good care of my wife and children.
I love helping people!!

Enjoy the photos ... Together, we can do this and help soooo many people find hope and better health!!!!

Have a Great Week!

Polly.

Grandmother asks: Are you a carrot, egg, or coffee bean?

I'd not hear this before but am contemplating its many meanings - meanings for me personally and professionally ... Enjoy!

Grandmother says... Carrots, Eggs, or Coffee; "Which are you?"

A young woman went to her grandmother and told her about her life and how things were so hard for her. She did not know how she was going to make it and wanted to give up. She was tired of fighting and struggling. It seemed as one problem was solved a new one arose.

Her grandmother took her to the kitchen. She filled three pots with water. In the first, she placed carrots, in the second she placed eggs and the last she placed ground coffee beans. She let them sit and boil without saying a word.

In about twenty minutes she turned off the burners. She fished the carrots out and placed them in a bowl. She pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. Then she ladled the coffee out and placed it in a bowl. Turning to her granddaughter, she asked, "Tell me what do you see?"

"Carrots, eggs, and coffee," she replied.

She brought her closer and asked her to feel the carrots. She did and noted that they'd gotten soft. She then asked her to take an egg and break it.

After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.

Finally, she asked her to sip the coffee. The granddaughter smiled as she tasted its rich aroma. The granddaughter then asked. "What's the point, grandmother?"

Her grandmother explained that each of these objects had faced the same adversity--boiling water--but each reacted differently.

The carrot went in strong, hard and unrelenting. However, after being subjected to the boiling water, it softened and became weak. The egg had been fragile. Its thin outer shell had protected its liquid interior. But, after sitting through the boiling water, its inside became hardened.

The ground coffee beans were unique, however. After they were in the boiling water, they had changed the water.

"Which are you?" she asked her granddaughter.

"When adversity knocks on your door, how do you respond? Are you a carrot, an egg, or a coffee bean?"

Think of this: Which am I?

Am I the carrot that seems strong, but with pain and adversity, do I wilt and become soft and lose my strength?

Am I the egg that starts with a malleable heart, but changes with the heat? Did I have a fluid spirit, but after a death, a breakup, a financial hardship or some other trial, have I become hardened and stiff?

Does my shell look the same, but on the inside am I bitter and tough with a stiff spirit and a hardened heart?

Or am I like the coffee bean? The bean actually changes the hot water, the very circumstance that brings the pain. When the water gets hot, it releases the fragrance and flavor. If you are like the bean, when things are at their worst, you get better and change the situation around you.

When the hours are the darkest and trials are their greatest do you elevate to another level?

Wendy's Update!

Yesterday, we got to cheer Wendy and Gene on at the annual "Shamrock 8km Race" in Portland.  It was 32 degrees with clear skies in Portland and we did quite a bit of dancing around on the street corner in an effort to stay warm as the sea of green-clad runners jogged past us.  Thankfully we were bundled up, the band on the opposite corner was thumping and the energy was fantastic!
Wendy is 15 pounds away from her goal ... remember her story? She dropped 100 pounds in 2010, enjoyed a second pregnancy and has had to restart her weight-loss/health gain journey last spring.  She's inspiring us all by incorporating the "Habits of Health" and shrinking a second time!! Read her story and watch her video:

This is my dear friend Wendy's Story ... she's shrinking for the second time!

Wendy is amazing - as a client, a friend, and a coach ... we're calling her the Magic Woman who did it twice!  Click Here To see her and hear her story in her own words,

Wendy shares:
At my heaviest, I was 100 pounds over weight.  We wanted to start our family and I knew that being obese could compromise pregnancy, labor and birth so I struggled and lost 30 pounds in 6 months before pregnancy - it was the hardest thing I have ever done!
When my first born was 9 months old, my weight was higher than ever and my hope hit rock bottom. I could barely get up off the floor after playing with my baby. Thankfully, I found a program that allowed me to change my habits and get rid of an additional 70 pounds in 7 months with ease. I am now living a life that allows me to focus on what matters most!
Wendy continues to inspire me and others ...She and her husband have added a new baby daughter this year and again, she's had to make the decision and commit to reclaiming her petite size a second time around. As a result, she's continuing to mature as a Health Coach and Team leader.

If you know a young woman who wants to get pregnant or mom who is struggling to get her baby weight off, give us a call now!!!

*Results vary.  Typical weight loss on the Medifast 5 & 1 Plan® is 2-5 lbs per week for the first 2 weeks and 1-2 lbs per week thereafter.

Keep in mind that sustainable weight loss and incorporation the Habits of Health for a life time are the real objectives.

Don't Cheat, Here's Why!

Dr Andersen writes:

Important information to remember…. Whether it’s an “Evening Weakening” or a “Weakened Weekend”… Here are some very important reasons why you want to follow the directions and not be “on again off again”.
  1. The first reason is that you will get the best results.
  2. In order for the Program to be effective, you must be in the fat burning state.  Why?  Because when you are burning fat you have lots of energy, not tired, not hungry, and most importantly…you are burning fat, not muscle.  We want you to spare your muscle as it is very important in your metabolism, calorie burning ability, and strength.
  3. It is very unhealthy to be going in and out of the fat burning state.  This will cause a stress to your body whether you can feel it or not.
  4. This “on again off again” behavior is not helping you to learn healthy eating habits, in fact, just the opposite. You will be teaching yourself a very unhealthy habit, possibly binging, and also weakening any will power you might of thought you had.
  5. Drinking on the weekends… Just say “no”.  Alcohol lets your defenses down and fills you up with empty calories and carbs, which will kick you out of the fat burning stage.
  6. When you kick out, it can take up to three days to kick back in. Causing you to be hungry and possibly tired until you are burning fat again.
  7. In other words…If you can’t do it right, switch to a maintenance-type program with more calories until you are truly ready.

"I Can't Afford It ..."

While sharing the program I work with, a friend of mine said, "I can't afford it." As you might imagine, this statement completely shut down the conversation ... it left me wondering what he couldn't afford and if there was any way I could help him get what he wanted.

Over the ten years that I've known him, he's frequently expressed concern and dismay about his health and the excess weight he's carrying. It seemed to me that choosing to purchase "groceries" from me for a short period of time wasn't the real issue.
So what was he saying?

First it's important for all you coaches and service providers out there to repeat after me: "It's not about me!" Because it isn't about you. It's all about the fears that a prospective client has. They may be afraid of several things:

  • I might fail and disappoint myself, family and my friend.
  • I don't see this as sustainable ... I'll spend all this $$$ then yo-yo again like before.
  • What if it's really a rip-off or I can't do it and my friendship suffers even more?
  • Going on program could change everything!!!
  • I'm terrified!
So what do we say? I'd like to suggest a way to re-frame the conversation.
Here's my ideas:
  • Start by acknowledging the concerns and agreeing with your friend: "Yes, it's an investment and is worthy of thoughtful consideration."
  • Ask, "If you could afford it, what would your concerns be?"
  • Ask if they'd be interested in your story. Here's mine:
"I was concerned about the cost too. I didn't want to get ripped off and was afraid we'd fail. I knew that committing to the program would be a real game changer for both Greg and I. On the other hand, I was so worried about Greg's health and frustrated that all other efforts hadn't worked ... I decided to trust the friend that shared the program with me."
  • Ask if you can ask a few questions ... find out why carrying the excess weight worries them.  Hopefully your friend will share what it will mean to them if/when they begin to gain better health.
  • Ask if they'd like to hear how you made the program affordable for you while you went through the rapid weight loss phase which took a number of months.
  • Finally, think this through and be prepared! How did you budget? Did you review bank statements and calculate your spending on groceries, dining out, Starbucks, alcohol purchases, and entertainment? What did you cut back on or give up to gain your goals? In the long run, did the program save or cost you money? Was it worth the investment? How has your life changed????
  • Remember, we are asking the near impossible - we're asking potential clients to trust us long enough to experience it for themselves.
I hope these thoughts help ... Greg and I hesitated because of disbelief and fear. I couldn't afford to buy in to something that wasn't going to work, wouldn't be sustainable, or that would perpetuate poor habits and health. Once we decided to start on program, we wanted it YESTERDAY! And it was worth every nickle ... We are close to "four years slim" and I only wish we hadn't waited so long!

Expectations and Shoulds

Sent by my friend Shell Tain!
Robert Fritz wrote wonderful post on "Balance" today.  I related to it on so many levels.

I love his technique of making a Structural Tension Chart ... it's a process I use weekly, monthly and annually.  Here's my short version for today ... hint: read it from the bottom up.

Vision - Working steadily, see progress, feel effective.
Having a smooth, fun presentation this evening

Action Steps

  • Take a walk
  • Plan to be out of the office at 3pm
  • Schedule big tasks and relax
  • Pick up with the most important, short tasks first
  • Go take a 20 minute nap now
  • Prioritize tasks - put them in order on my desk
  • Be OK with feeling tired

Current Reality - Feeling bombarded with expectations and out of balance.
Was awake and up at 5am (really 4am if time change hadn't gone into effect!)
There are lots of wonderful "crops in the field" ... they each deserve attention
I love what I'm doing but suspect I'm just tired ...

I love this story about Jacquie:
http://www.healthcoachresource.com/2013/03/jacquies-story.html

And, here's one about Greg and I ...
I'm looking forward to hearing more about your story and sharing it if you'd like me to:

Favorite Quotes:
I saw a former coworker at her new school today and she was so surprised when she saw me.  She said, "Wow, you look great!  You've lost all the baby weight and then some.  Whatever you're doing is working for you!"  (Tell them you are working with me and give them my info!  If they just order through Medifast, they may just see it as "diet food."  Then, they may lose pounds of fat but gain them back ... my services are free and designed to get them them to their goals and beyond!)

I love the structure and security!  MF has taught me things I've never been able to learn before - like discipline, that I can be strong and can do it!  It has totally changed my life!

I'm down another 3 pounds!  At this rate, i'll be under 170 by swimsuit season ... I've haven't felt good in shorts for years and years!!!

My husband has decided now that he’s a grandpa (December 20 – a boy, our first grandchild!) that he needs help losing weight. How do I set up an account for him?

I just took the health assessment quiz again.  I scored 64, which is a huge improvement from 22, which was my score in September.  I went from very unhealthy to just unhealthy.  I have also lost 2 more pounds.

I have a question about working out.  I know I should be doing it but ... I did it for 4 weeks and only lost around 1 or 2 pounds total and I was hungry all the time. I stopped going on the treadmill 3 weeks ago and I have lost 9 pounds.  What is going on?  (I bet you all know the answer to this one! Call me if you'd like to talk!)

Have a wonder-filled week!!!

Jacquie's Story

Typical results: lose 2-5 lbs per wk for the first
two weeks then 1-2 lbs per wk thereafter
From Jacquie:

I have struggled with my weight my entire life. Shortly after I got married I gained about 50 pounds. I read every book and tried every diet, but I just ended up losing and gaining the same 10-15 pounds over and over again for 12 years. My goal was to just reach a healthy weight; I wasn't being unrealistic, but was disappointed again and again.

Then I was diagnosed with stage 2 melanoma...my health became much more important to me so I contacted my health coach. I really thought this would be just another diet that I would fail. I told her I'd try it for 1 month and see how it went...I am SO thankful I did!

I have lost 60 pounds and 31 inches of fat, but I have never been happier or felt healthier. There is so much more to this program than just weight loss. Now, for me, weight loss is the bonus to the support and feeling of health and happiness I experience every day. I'd been hiding, and now I have confidence that I thought I'd never get back."

David and Suzy get graphic at the grocery store!

Meet David and Suzy!!!

From Katia:
These 10 pound bags of potatoes represent the amount of weight they lost. I love this photo because it reminds me when I was embarrassing my husband Owen at the grocery store. I was dragging around two 40 pound bags of dog food. Just to get a sense of what if felt like to carry around 80 pounds I had lost way back in the beginning.

Owen finally forced me to put it in the basket because folks thought he was making me carry it. I was thinking about it being only me who was forcing me to carry the extra weight.

So happy to have lost my potatoes and my sacks of dog food!! LOL!

Making it Easy to Take Shape for Life!

Make it Easy & Take Shape for Life!

1) Write out your health goal and say it out loud daily and often. Make it something that really gives you energy and determination to reach it! It is often helpful if you memorize it and repeat it throughout the day and before you go to bed.

2) Write down all the secondary choices that you will make in order to reach your goal, such as drink 10 glasses of water daily, skip happy hour and instead do some healthy minded activity that will make you feel good like take a walk, play tennis or ride a bike.
3) Restock your kitchen and get rid of all temptations. Designate a special cupboard for other family members if you must keep these tempting items around. Add good choices to your snack arsenal: like celery, pickles, green beans, cucumber, bullion, sugar free jello, and sugar free pop cycles.
4) Explain to family members and friends how important it is for you not to be tempted and that you are calling on them for help and support. Better yet, ask some to join you. Having a "buddy" really helps you both.
5) Start journaling: write down everything…what you ate, how you feel. You will learn from your daily eating habits and be inspired when reading back at your successes! TSFL has a great internet tools. Go on my site and click on "Support" and on the right side under "Helpful Resources." I encourage you to sign up for "My TSFL Online Community" which has lots of information and recipes to allow you to maximize your total experience with your Take Shape for Life program.

6) Plan your day: Lay out your meals, know your time schedule. Understand that you may need to eat more frequently during that first week, so prepare accordingly. Know the “do’s and don’ts” of TSFL

7) Measure up: Use measuring cups, spoons, and kitchen scale to know that you are eating the right amt of food. You must educate your eye to proper portion size. My suggestion is to measure and weigh your lean and green for at least the first 2 weeks, then one week out of every month there after.
8) Always start your day with a Medifast meal (oatmeal, cappuccino, shake) first thing in the morning. The morning meal will jump starts your metabolism. Research shows that people who eat breakfast, burn 200-300 calories more per day! My own experience has been that those clients who choose to exercise or go to work without eating first, do not lose weight very fast!
9) Eat slowly. Take at least 20 minutes to eat. Use a straw to sip on your shake. Use this time to write in your journal or read a bit of a positive or inspiring book.
10) Distract yourself when cravings strike. You hopefully will not be hungry between your Medifast meals, but if a craving does pop up…be prepared! Make a list of things to do around the house (except the kitchen) that will take your mind off of your craving. For example take a walk, clean some windows, fold clothes, wash your hair, etc. The activity only need take about 15 minutes because a craving usually will go away by then. Also drink a big glass of water during this activity, and I think you will be pleasantly surprised when you rise victorious!
11) Take charge at restaurants. Know exactly how you will handle yourself there. Being prepared is the best defense. Say "No" to bread. Have a shake before you go and then consider ordering two appetizers (salad and shrimp cocktail) because appetizers are much closer to the amt of food we should be eating. If you order a full meal, ask for a take home box before the meal comes and quickly place half of the dinner into the box for another day.
12) Call me each week to let me know how it is going and what I can do to help you.

13) Join our Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/HealthCoachResource?ref=hl

Favorite Quotes of the Week:
I just took the health assessment quiz again.  I scored 64, which is a huge improvement from 22, which was my score in September.  I went from very unhealthy to just unhealthy.  I have also lost 2 more pounds.

I bought a pair of pants yesterday on sale that were two pant sizes down from where I was when I started, which felt great. I am looking forward to being smaller and being able to happily swimsuit shop this summer, and just be more comfortable in my body.

This morning I was 267 but I was at 270 longer than forever so now my skin has caught up with me (no sags) lol I hope to continue to lose no matter what, even after my birthday...

I got the magazine today! I really enjoyed reading through it. A big part of my job is designing magazines so it's always neat to look through and see what other designers are doing, plus the content was interesting too.

I finally hit my 20 pound mark! 191 on the scale this morning!  It was somewhat surprising because I sprained my ankle a few weeks ago in roller derby practice and haven't really been able to do any sort of exercising ... with the weather getting better and sun staying up longer, I can start biking/running again.

I love this photo of Molly and her husband ... they are amazing!!!

Have a fabulous week - keep the check-ins and referrals coming!  Thanks!!!  Polly

I Almost got Arrested ... And, It's All About Greed ...

I almost got arrested taking this photo. It's of a poster that was covering the outer wall of an AM/PM store several years ago.

It was late, dark and rainy when I saw it. So, as I popped out of my car and started taking photos with my camera, I inadvertently alarmed the store keeper. He came out, asked me what the **** I thought I was doing and threatened to call the police. I was just trying to get a good picture without glare. I started to tell him about being a Health Coach but he wasn't impressed. I was bad for business and he asked me to leave, which I did after getting one more shot!

So, what's the significance of this photo and why have I used it in every health and wellness talk I've given since?  Who is "The Beast?"  Why is the Beast hungry, chained, and being encouraged by a group of apparently buff and sexy people?  Who are these cheerleaders?  They certainly aren't Health Coaches or benefactors  ... I believe they are the marketers who know about my inner child ... that little Cookie Monster who takes over whenever my insulin switch gets turned on.

This poster is all about need and greed ...

  • the need and hunger that occurs when I'm not on Program (Click Here to read more about following the BESLIM lifestyle towards better and better health)
  • the need that every cell in our body feels when it's not being well nourished.
  • the desperation that our young people are feeling ... they are really addicted to junk food and find themselves chained to bad habits, bad advice, and abundant nutrient-poor "food" choices.
  • the greedy exaltation that junk and fast food marketers feel when they see us buying their products and pushing their profits up.
What else do you see in this piece of advertising?  What are you learning that helps you break the chains and develop life promoting habits?

Remember, it's not just about weight loss ... it's about tapping into your fat stores, using them efficiently, gaining healthy habits and moving consistently forward on the path to optimal health at every age.

I Want to Belong ...

As a Health Coach, I spend quite a bit of time encouraging coaches and clients to discover and define their "Why."  I've found that an individual's Why has to become much bigger than the ever-present obstacles, distractions, reasons and excuses that keep us from dreaming, mapping out a strategy, taking action, and staying on track.

In my 40 years of presumed adulthood, my own Why has been under construction, somewhat illusive, and vulnerable to change. This morning I saw a little glimmer of light ... In addition to wanting to:
  • Be of service and live in spiritual alignment
  • Get high on transformative energy and help others do the same and
  • Have "the usual" ... a home, happy marriage, gorgeous children, health and abundance ...
In addition, I want to belong! I thrive when creating in a community of like-minded, positive people!! This little re-discovery has helped me look back at the pattern of my life choices and is helping me firm up the vision of where I want to go in the next 40 years, delete the distractions, and establish the action steps I need to take in order to get there!

Everything I've done in the past has led me to this moment.  One of the best parts is that current clients and health coaches are playing a major role in propelling me forward, keeping me focused, accountable, and happily in community ... Thank you for your role in launching, teaching, needing and pushing me to higher heights!

Tell me about your Why ... how is it changing?  How is it helping you become the person you are meant to be???

I can picture us joining hearts and hands and singing "I Can See Clearly Now" ... Yeah!!!
