The Extraordinary Costs of an Old Sideshow Act

The growing obesity epidemic is not just a circus sideshow anymore.  The health care cost of obesity for our country are nearly $160,000,000,000.00 ($160 billion) annually.  To put this into perspective, the damages from hurricane "Sandy" are expected to cost $50 billion.  For health care alone, this equals the cost of damages from hurricanes Sandy and Katrina combined, every year.   According to the National Institute of Health the number of deaths each year attributed to obesity exceeds 300,000 surpassing tobacco as the number one preventable killer.  Put into perspective, Sandy took less than 70 lives.

What is even more "freakish," is a 2009 report from Emory University, entitled "The Future Cost of Obesity." The study indicates that at the current rate we are gaining weight as a nation, the estimated health care costs for obesity related illness will be $344 billion dollars by 2018.  According to this study, in 5 years, the national average obesity rate will top 42.8%, with 6 states estimated to be over 50%.

Day 9 of 30 Days of Hope and Inspiration: Linda Sue's story

I love Linda Sue's story!  We get to meet the most incredible people whose stories are very similar and touching.

The other day a "newbie" at my gym actually asked me if I was a trainer! I was stunned:  Me, a trainer??? In May 2009 that would never have entered anyone's mind! 

I have more energy, and love to shop for clothes and groceries. I can walk all day without pain.

Before Take Shape For Life, I was obese and very unhappy with the way I looked and felt. I had a lot of pain in my knees and I would go straight to the couch or bed as soon as I came home from work.
I kept getting bigger and heavier, and my doctor recommended LAP-BAND surgery, but because I suffer with strokes and TIAs ("mini-strokes)", I wasn't a candidate.
When my Health Coach introduced me to Take Shape For Life, I saw results after week one!
My friends are just stunned at my results ... And, thank goodness, my husband was entirely supportive.  He said, "We can't afford for you to be unhealthy and unhappy."
My knees don't swell badly anymore and I can sleep easily at night because I'm not in pain. I work out at my gym six days a week, and love it.

Day 8 of 30 Days of Hope and Inspiration: My future is bright!

Kyle has taken off 162 pounds this year!  His Health Coach says:

By using the Program, "Kyle has gone down 15 pant sizes, 3 shirt sizes and 3 shoe sizes and he no longer hurts from walking from one end of Campus to the other! There are so many things that have changed for him. He is also so excited about what his future holds!

 Kyle is an amazing young man.  The summer before his sophomore year in college, he decided that he was going to make changes in his health and started working with a Health Coach.  He has always been active, but struggled with poor eating habits that over the years added considerable weight to his frame.  He is a full time college student living away from home.  He follows the meal program and checks in with his Health Coach every week. Kyle has taken control of his life and (even) with plenty of distraction and obstacles, has remained committed to his health.

A question that came from the last "Mastery of Dialogue"
TeleClass I did was....

"I just want to say that I really enjoy your TeleClass because
you helped me understand the questions I need to ask. However, I
find that I struggle with talking to my prospects like there's a
block when I talk."

One of the reasons you might be having a block is because you may
still be concentrating on what you are going to gain from talking
with people.

Here’s what happens when you focus on you and what you want -
your anxiety level goes up. When your anxiety goes up you're not
relaxed. You can't think, nor are you creative, except you create
your own block and end up serving no one. Least of all yourself!

The answer is to:

  * Let go of what you want! DETACH from your expectations and

  * Focus simply on the Process of Discovery to find out if they
  still have the kind of problems that you might be able to help
  them solve. THAT'S ALL! If they do... THEN you introduce the
  idea that you can help!

The Discovery Process in Natural Selling replaces the urge to
present or telling your story to soon, persuading, closing and
objection handling.  It's the exact opposite from conventional
selling and will give you the exact opposite results.

End result. You’ll remove that block you're having!

What's "Intrinsic Motivation?"

 According to Daniel Pink, "Intrinsic Motivation" is the Drive that comes from within and stems from the "deeply human need to direct our own lives (be autonomous), to learn and create new things, and to better ourselves and our world."  

I've been looking at my own motivation to share and build a relationship and caring-based business. I love helping individuals and families transform!  I love being a part of something big and positive and real!  

And, in this game of life, we only win is everyone wins!  Share your thoughts!  Give a shout-out for being All In !!!!

When We Get Off Track ...

A friend shared a great comparison to the dilemma when we think “I screwed up on my eating plan today, well I might as well go all of the way ..."
The comparison is to taking a trip, if we make a mistake and miss the exit for Salem, we don’t’ say “I might as well keep driving to Medford”. 
The same thing should apply to our health. If we get off track we should just say “OK, now I will head back the direction that I should be going!” Just get back on track and keep on going!

Brandon was a wrestler in high school and knew how to cut weight. The hard part was keeping it off. Now after losing 55 lbs he has learned the habits to keep it off and now is training for a triathlon. Health is possible!!

30 Days of Hope: Day 2 ... 513 Pounds of Fat Gone!

Here's a photo of some of our team in San Francisco at a TSFL conference on Sept 29th, 2012.    

Together, the 8 of us have burned through 513 pounds!!!  The very best part is that we are all developing habits that make the slim, healthy body sustainable AND we are developing lasting friendships!!!

The fellow in the center has been on program for 6+ weeks ... he's down 45 pounds so far and is so pleased.

30 Days of Hope and Inspiration: Day 1

Taylor has gone from size 22 to 12!!! And says, "I'm still going strong!"
We are so excited to start publishing 30 Days of Hope and Inspiration!  Everyday we get to hear stories and participate in the journey to better health that our clients and coaches have embarked on.  Some stories make me cry and some make me laugh ... they all make me feel honored and proud to be doing this work at this time in my life.

I'll include my own story later in the series ... but I'll share with you that I felt very chubby and unattractive during my late teens ... it negatively affected my self esteem and the choices I made.  Fortunately, I was able to take off 22 pounds just before my 20th birthday and my whole life changed!

Can you begin to imagine how Taylor's life will change as a result of her improved health???

We are All Foodies!

Recently, a brand new client told me that she was worried about her ability to stay on the Program for very long because she loves food ... are you kidding me?  ... We are all "Foodies!!!"  We all love, respect, and appreciate really tasty food!

Creating an Intentionally Peaceful Passage to Sleep

Remember the "Good 'Ol Days" when, if you were lucky, you got a bedtime story and a kiss just as you snuggled down for the night and you "Slept like a Baby?"  Dr Andersen, co-founder of Take Shape for Life, encourages all of us to pursue restorative sleep as part of our journey to weight management and optimal health.  It's great in theory ... but if you are like me, the demands of the day, last minute e-mail checking, and a bit of TV watching often encroach on a healthy bedtime routine.

Meet Renae - She's Loving the Program!

Like most folks, I appreciate things that actually work ... I'm so happy to have become a Health Coach and love the results our clients get and the support we get to provide.  It's all about using the program correctly and building relationships.
