There's a Quiet Place of No Words

Greg and Katy in deep conversation!
In Start With Why, Simon Sinek describes the place deep inside each of us that is called the "Limbic Brain." It's a place of feelings where decisions are made and actions take root.  This place is referred to when we say, "I knew it in my gut," or "I felt it in my heart." It's also the place we go to when we sit quietly and turn off the negative self-talk. We go there when we meditate and pray, when we laugh and smile. We feel it when we hug a returning loved one, cradle a sleeping child, or help a stranded stranger find her car in a snowy parking lot. It's a place of "knowing" everything will be ok.

This feeling center, that has no words, is also vulnerable. It can get drowned out by the noise and demands of the "Season." Many experience vague feelings of guilt - it seems that we've never done, given, or been quite "enough!" The marketing companies love this! Those media experts, news choosers, non-nourishing, too-fast-food-pushers, and toy makers are aiming their messages directly at our not-so-logical feeling center.  They encourage us to "make memories" with expensive cameras and gifts, "show her you love her" with jewelry we can't afford, and "make this the greatest holiday ever" by purchasing lovable stuffed toys and action warriors. Then we can celebrate and numb our feeling center further with "spirits" of specialty beers and wine!

Whew! It's time to slow down, regroup, recenter, re-focus, get a grip, touch base and re-charge! Revisit this core, feeling center again and again. Breath in and out deeply. Choose to be mindfully in the present moment and ridiculously happy. Everyone benefits when we take care of ourselves and consistently do, give, and be our best.

The next step is to create the vision of the results you want to bring into being. More on that later this week. For more information on the Habits of Health and the support Take Shape for Life can offer, go to www.HealthCoachResource.TSFL.com. And, don't let anyone mess with your Limbic Brain!

How Do I Feel About Success?

16 pounds made a real difference!
Good Morning Take Shapers!
Heads Up! A new Health Challenge is fixin' to begin on March 1st! Click Here to check it out and get started!!!

Last week, I suggested we define "Success." We all know that when a goal is well defined, it's easier to aim at and achieve. Some cool responses came in! Here are my Favorite Quotes:

How do you define success?

Success is when I stay centered and don't allow myself to overindulge ... I'm in maintenance and haven't always found it easy to keep the pounds from sneaking back on. Currently, I'm tracking my habits, watching for the moments when I'm most likely to fall off my wagon. I've been keeping a small notebook on my kitchen counter and recording what I eat after 5pm each day ... It seems that I eat normally throughout the day until it's time to fix dinner! Knowing what's throwing me off has been really helpful in keeping me mindful, satisfied, happy and trim.
How do you know you are on the right track?
(From a client who is down 37 pounds and has a bit more to go) I know I'm on track when I set out my Medifast meals for the day and smile with gratitude!!! I love feeling the fat melt off me! I love it that I just make ONE decision each morning and evening - it's the decision to stay true to the program and feel it work for me!!

What are your daily, weekly, monthly, and annual desired achievements? I made a list of all the things I've been successful at in my life - I've done lots of cool things but being healthy hasn't been one of them. So, I asked myself how I could use the "Decide, Focus, and Get-er-done" tactics I've used so successfully in the past ... it's working!!! (Down 17 pounds to date)

What are the Baby Steps that need to be taken every day?You know this one! I call you!! Thanks for helping me - once we broke it down, I wasn't so overwhelmed ... I can do this!! (Down 56 pounds, stalled, regained 8, back on program!)

Share the thoughts that come to YOUR mind! The remaining questions on last week's list are:
  • What are your bench marks?
  • How will you know when you get there?
  • What do you do to celebrate your successes?
  • How do you keep it light, playful, and fun?
Most of you know my story, my sweetheart, Greg, was dangerously obese and I had tried for years and years to get and stay slim. Teaming up with Take Shape for Life changed our lives! Be sure to check out Dr Andersen's Blog - there's soooo much good info here!

Finally, take a look at the two photos of me - you can see how I feel about success by the look in my eyes! I have coaching call time slots open on Mondays and Wednesdays - let me know if you want one of them. Check in over the weekend - I can't wait to get your updates!

How Do You Define Success?

Last week I was looking at "Recidivism" and how to re-define "Failure." I received several replies. It's fun to see how readily we can adjust our concepts and take good care of ourselves without making excuses or being in denial. Many breathed a sigh of relief that they weren't being judged and were free to fall down and pick themselves up as often as necessary! This isn't about dieting and weight loss ... it's about gaining good health in every way!

This week, I'd like to encourage you to define "Success."
  • How do you define success?
  • What does it look like to you personally, in this moment?
  • How do you know you are on the right track?
  • What are your daily, weekly, monthly, and annual desired achievements?
  • What are the Baby Steps that need to be taken every day?
  • What are your bench marks?
  • How will you know when you get there?
  • What do you do to celebrate your successes?
  • How do you keep it light, playful, and fun?
Share the answer just one of those questions ... it will be fun to see what you come up with!

The only "Bad" thing to do is to do nothing! Making a mistake, falling off your wagon, refusing to learn or continue towards your goals - these are the true errors. Thankfully, we have chosen to do this together!!! Call me, check-in, click REPLY, text, or whistle loudly - let's stay connected!

My favorite book of the week is The Gift of Imperfection by Brene Brown ... check out her Reader Worksheet and Book Club Guide.

Thanks for your referrals and have a great week! Polly.

A Mayonnaise Jar and Two Cups of Coffee

I've heard several versions of this story and never tire of it!

"A professor stood before his philosophy class and had some items in front of him. When the class began, he wordlessly picked up a very large and empty mayonnaise jar and proceeded to fill it with golf balls. He then asked the students if the jar was full. They agreed that it was.

The professor then picked up a box of pebbles and poured them into the jar. He shook the jar lightly. The pebbles rolled into the open areas between the golf balls. He then asked the students again if the jar was full. They agreed it was.

The professor next picked up a box of sand and poured it into the jar. Of course, the sand filled up everything else. He asked once more if the jar was full. The students responded with an unanimous "yes."

The professor then produced two cups of coffee from under the table and poured the entire contents into the jar effectively filling the empty space between the sand. The students laughed.

"Now," said the professor as the laughter subsided, "I want you to recognize that this jar represents your life. The golf balls are the important things--your family, your children, your health, your friends and your favorite passions--and if everything else was lost and only they remained, your life would still be full.  The pebbles are the other things that matter like your job, your house and your car.

The sand is everything else--the small stuff. "If you put the sand into the jar first," he continued, "there is no room for the pebbles or the golf balls. The same goes for life. If you spend all your time and energy on the small stuff you will never have room for the things that are important to you.

"Pay attention to the things that are critical to your happiness. Play with your children. Take time to get medical checkups. Take your spouse out to dinner. Play another 18. There will always be time to clean the house and fix the disposal. Take care of the golf balls first--the things that really matter. Set your priorities. The rest is just sand."

One of the students raised her hand and inquired what the coffee represented. The professor smiled. "I'm glad you asked.  It just goes to show you that no matter how full your life may seem, there's always room for a couple of cups of coffee with a friend."

Recidivism - failure or normal learning opportunity?

We are after sustainable, life improving results!
I've been reviewing the literature on "Recidivism." For any one who's ever been on a diet, recidivism refers to
the act of reverting to old habits and regaining
lost pounds
 after successfully
struggling to get them OFF!

Is this "failure" or is this part of learning and adapting? I think it's only failure is we don't learn or if we give up on ever reaching our goals of better health.

Sure, I've had periods in the last six years where my pants began to feel shorter and tighter, the scale indicated that my weight was on the rise, and I felt out of control ... like I had re-boarded the runaway-get-fat-quick train. But I thought about you (my accountability buddies), why being slim and feisty is so important to me, and what works and doesn't work for me. I've reset my compass (again) and redirected the train.

Take a look at Failure is an Option, a blog I wrote last summer on failure ... let's see failure for what it is, "Failure" is a game, an opportunity to learn, adapt, tweak behaviors, figure things out, and go forward!

Currently, I'm working with a number of clients who initially used the Medifast foods to boost them towards weight loss goals and are now using a variety of programs that are really helping them. I love hearing about what's working! I've found gems of truth as I read from different weight management, health gain proponents.

If you are struggling or feeling like a failure, PLEASE call me! I have a few more tricks up my sleeve to help you get where you want to go.

By the way, i
n 1999, an article was published in the New York Times that looked at the myth of recidivism in folks who lost weight. The researches had realized the the myth that 95% of people who lose weight regain it was in fact, a myth based on research done in the 1950s!

But in fact ... no one has any idea how many people can lose weight and keep it off. Now, as researchers try to determine how many people have succeeded, they are also studying the success stories for lessons that might inspire others to try.
''That 95 percent figure has become clinical lore,'' said Dr. Thomas Wadden, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Pennsylvania. There is no basis for it, he said, ''but it's part of the mythology of obesity.''

The study of who succeeds (why and how!) is what propelled Dr Andersen and many others to research, develop, and publish their programs. Let's continue to pool our experience. Together, we are a mighty team of knowledge and experience, together, we can help each other survive and thrive!

Check in, refer friends and family members, and have a GREAT week! Polly.

Time to Celebrate!

This is Graig and Debbie's story…

“Recently we celebrated an incredible milestone,” says Debbie.

“For starters, we celebrated our 35th wedding anniversary in Las Vegas, which, by the way, is where we got married. What’s even more incredible (and thanks to our health coach and the Optimal Health Program) is that after nearly two decades of being OBESE, we’re celebrating losing more than 190 pounds together! (*Results vary: Typical results are 2-5 pounds per week for the first 2 weeks and 1-2 pounds per week thereafter.)

It’s amazing how much healthier we’ve become and how much younger we feel. Who says you can't 'turn back time?’”

Wendy's Story - a Mom gets her "Baby Weight" off!

Enjoy Wendy's story - she loves working with moms who want to "get their baby weight" off!  Remember, it's not just about losing weight, it's about getting healthy! If you'd like to contact Wendy or work with her, you can reach her at:  www.cufit.tsfl.comwww.facebook.com/cufit

"The best way to tell you about my Program is to share my story.  After high school I stopped exercising on a daily basis and once I was in college I found a love for beer and a new boyfriend.  My BF lived at home still and since I was a starving college student his family opened their home to me and I ate dinner with them every night.  They made unhealthy dinners like mac and cheese with hot dogs. I am sure they never had fresh veggies in the house.  I was surrounded by a family of four guys who could eat just about anything and they would never gain a pound.

As the years flew by, it was harder and harder to keep a healthy weight and the more weight I gained, the harder it was to exercise.  Ten years went by and I was 100 lbs over weight.  My BF and I had gotten married and our eating habits kept getting worse.  We were ready to start a family, but I was afraid of gaining even more weight if I got pregnant.  I made a decision to change my life.

My mom and I joined a weight loss group. With a weekly support group and diet and exercise I lost 30 lbs but it took six months.  It was the hardest 6 months of my life!  (After having) our daughter, I was able to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight within 6 weeks, but I was still 70 lbs over weight and the thought of it taking over a year to lose it terrified me.

In January of 2010, I met my mentors who helped me Take Shape For Life! I started eating every 2-3 hours, utilizing portion controlled meal replacements and focusing on preparing just one lean and green meal per day.  With the support of my FREE Health Coach, I was able to change my eating habits and lose an additional 64 lbs in 8 months.  I took off an average of 2 lbs per week.  The pounds melted off quickly. I met my goal and transitioned easily.by using my new habits and making healthy choices.  The goal is to make a life change and not to diet!

I decided to become a Health Coach because this program worked for me and I want to share it with everyone who is ready to start their own journey!  I am on a mission to get America healthy one person at a time!"
